How to configure Outlook to use an MSN POP3 account

Outlook to connect to your MSN e-mail account.

If you use an MSN POP3 e-mail account, go to the first section, "How to configure Outlook to use an MSN POP3 account."

If you use an MSN Web-based e-mail account, go to the second section, "How to configure Outlook to use an MSN Web-based account."


Method 1: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
  1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    control panel

    , and then copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Search box:

    Control Panel appears.
  2. If you see the Pick a category view, click User Accounts.

    If you do not see the Pick a category view, go to step 3.
  3. Double-click Mail.
  4. Click E-mail Accounts. The Account Settings window appears.
  5. On the E-mail tab, on the left side of the Account Settings window, click New.
  6. Click Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, and then click Next.
  7. Click to select the Manually configure server settings or additional server typesNext. check box, and then click
  8. Click Internet E-mail, and then click Next.
  9. On the Add New E-mail Account screen, type the following setting information:
    1. In the Your Name box, type your name as you want it to appear to recipients.
    2. In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address. For example, type yourusername@msn.com.
    3. In Account Type, select POP3.
    4. In the Incoming Mail Server box, type pop3.email.msn.com.
    5. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) box, type smtp.email.msn.com.
    6. In the User Name box, type your MSN account name.
    7. In the Password box, type your MSN password.
    8. Select the Remember Password check box, if you want to save it.
    9. Select the Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
  10. On the right side of the Add New E-Mail Account screen, click Test Account Settings. If you receive no errors, your e-mail account is set up correctly.

    If you receive an error, make sure that you have entered all the information correctly, and then click Test Account Settings again. If all the information is correct and you continue to receive errors, go to the "Next steps" section for additional help.
  11. Click Next, and then click Finish.
When you have completed these steps, try to send an e-mail message to yourself to make sure that Outlook is set up correctly. When the e-mail arrives, try to reply to it.

If the e-mail is sent correctly and you receive the reply correctly, Outlook is configured correctly.

If you do not receive the e-mail or if you do not receive the reply, Outlook is probably configured incorrectly. Go to the "Next steps" section for additional help.

Method 2: Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002

Follow these steps to use Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2002 to connect to your MSN e-mail account:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    control panel
    Control Panel appears.
  2. Double-click the Mail icon.
  3. Click E-mail Accounts.
  4. Click to select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
  5. Click to select POP3, and then click Next.
  6. On the Add New E-mail Account screen, type the following setting information:
    1. In the Your Name box, type your name as you want it to appear to recipients.
    2. In the Incoming Mail Server box, type your e-mail address. For example, type pop3.email.msn.com.
    3. In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address. For example, type yourusername@msn.com.
    4. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) box, type smtp.email.msn.com.
    5. In the User Name box, type your MSN user name.
    6. Select the Remember Password check box, if you want to save your password.
    7. In the Password box, type your MSN password.
    8. Select the Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
  7. In the lower-left corner of the Add New E-mail Account screen, click More Settings.
  8. On the Outgoing Server tab, select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication box.
  9. Select the Use same settings as my incoming mail server check box, and then click OK.
  10. On the right side of the Add New E-Mail Account screen, click Test Account Settings. If you receive no errors, your e-mail account is set up correctly.

    If you receive an error, make sure that you have entered all the information correctly, and then click Test Account Settings again. If all the information is correct and you continue to receive errors, go to the "Next steps" section for additional help.
  11. Click Next, and then click Finish.
When you have completed these steps, try to send yourself an e-mail message to make sure that Outlook is set up correctly. When the e-mail arrives, try to reply to it.

If the e-mail is sent correctly and you receive the reply correctly, Outlook is configured correctly.

If you do not receive the e-mail or if you do not receive the reply, Outlook is probably configured incorrectly. Go to the "Next steps" section for additional help.


Outlook to connect to an MSN Web-based e-mail account.

If you want to use Outlook 2007 to connect to your MSN Web-based account, use "Method 1: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007."

To use Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2002 to connect to your MSN Web-based account, go to "Method 2: Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002."

Method 1: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

Follow these steps to configure Outlook 2007 to connect to your MSN Web-based e-mail account:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

  2. If you see the Pick a category view, click User Accounts.

  9. Click Next, and then click Finish.
When you have completed these steps, try to send yourself an e-mail message to make sure that Outlook is set up correctly. When the e-mail arrives, try to reply to it.

If the e-mail is sent correctly and you receive the reply correctly, Outlook is configured correctly.

Method 2: Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002

Follow these steps to configure Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2002 to connect to your MSN Web-based e-mail account:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    control panel
    Control Panel appears.
  2. Double-click the Mail icon.
  3. Click E-mail Accounts.
  4. Select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
  5. Select HTTP, and then click Next.
  6. On the Add New E-mail Account screen, type the following setting information:
    1. In the Your Name box, type your name as you want it to appear to recipients.
    2. In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address. For example, type yourusername@msn.com.

      Note The HTTP Mail Service Provider setting automatically switches to MSN from Hotmail when you exit the e-mail address box.
    3. In the User Name box, type your MSN user name.
    4. In the Password box, type your MSN password.
    5. Select the Remember Password check box if you want to save your password.
    6. If the Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box is selected, click to clear it. If the Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box is not selected, leave it clear.
  7. Click Next, and then click Finish.
Your MSN Web-based Inbox now appears in the Outlook Bar and the Outlook folder list. If the Inbox does not appear, something probably went wrong. For more help, go to the "Next Steps" section.

When you have completed these steps, try to send yourself an e-mail message to make sure that Outlook is set up correctly. When the e-mail arrives, try to reply to it.

If the e-mail is sent correctly and you receive the reply correctly, Outlook is configured correctly.



Note MSN also offers an Outlook connection service, Microsoft Outlook Connector for MSN. This is not an e-mail account. However, if you use MSN 9.0, it can help you connect Outlook to your MSN e-mail account.
