How to Reinstall Outlook Express

This article will allow you to reinstall Outlook Express under any Windows XP
environment. There are 2 separate sections, one for Non-SP versions of windows /
Slip-streamed versions of windows, and one for windows releases that have been
updated to SP1 or SP2.

** Before beginning a manual re-install of Outlook Express please obtain permission
from Consult.

** Throughout this process you will be prompted for various files on the drive and
will need to browse to these files manually.

** The steps listed may need to followed after this if errors
appear in the address book as well.

An alternative way to install Outlook Express on a Windows XP system can be found
in the article KB318378 How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express in Windows XP.

Section 1)

Show hidden files and folders:

1. Open Windows Explorer

2. Go to Tools > Folder Options, and click on the View tab

3. Check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

4. Uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and "Hide Protected Operating
System Files"

5. Click Apply and OK

Remove the existing Outlook Express installation:

1. Delete the files contained in the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder,
except msoe.txt *** (Do not delete the folder, only the files contained in it.)

2. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Section 1a)

Verify the Windows XP version and install type:

Before beginning the install process verify what SP version of windows the customer
is running and how it was installed. Then follow the correct path listed below.

First verify the SP version that is installed:

1. To do this go to Control Panel and double click System.

2. In this window what is the operating system listed as?

If there is no service pack version listed proceed to the section entitled "Non-SP
versions / Slip-Streamed versions". You should ask at this point if the customers
have their Windows CDs.

If Service Pack 1 / Service Pack 2 are listed we will need to determine how the
service pack was installed

1. To do this, go to Start and Run

2. Type "%windir%\Servicepackfiles\i386" without the quotes and hit enter.

If you receive an error dialogue stating that Windows couldn't find the folder,
proceed to the section entitled "Non-SP Versions / Slip-Streamed Versions", as this
means that the Service Pack was installed with the Windows installation. You
should ask at this point if the customers have their Windows CDs.

If instead an Explorer window opens showing the contents of the
\Servicepackfiles\i386 folder, proceed to the section entitled "Upgraded SP
Versions", as this means that the Service Pack was installed after the Windows
installation.

Section 2)

"Non-SP versions / Slip-Streamed versions"
---------------------------------------------------------------------

If the customer has their Windows XP CD, begin reinstalling using the following
method:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. In Windows Explorer browse to C:\Windows\Inf
2. Right click on MSOE50.INF and select install
3. The install should begin prompting for the Windows CD. Insert the Windows XP CD
that the customer installed from. Click browse and from the drop down box select
the CD-ROM drive. Double click on the I386 folder and click Open. Then click OK.

The progress bar should run across and then the installer window should disappear
and Outlook Express should be reinstalled. You may need to restart after this is
complete for Outlook Express to be fully functional.

Section 2a)

If the customer has Windows XP SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed, but does not have their
Windows XP CD, or their system did not come with a Windows XP CD, we need to create
a cache of Service Pack files to proceed. To do this and reinstall Outlook
Express, us the following method:

1. Have the customer Browse to one of the following links for the
full install file for their SP version of Windows XP.

Windows XP SP1a:

Windows XP SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e3
68d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

2. Have the customer hit the “Download” button. Hit the “Save” button and change
the “Save in” drop down to c:\. In the “File Name” box, please ask them to rename
the file to “SP.exe” without the quotes.

3. Make a new folder on the customer’s c:\ drive and call it "SP".

4. Once the file finishes downloading*, go to Start, Run and type
“c:\sp.exe -x” (without the quotes) and hit ok.

NOTE: If the customer is not on a high speed internet connection, they may wish to
stop now and download this file from a location that does have high speed, burn the
file to a CD and call back when they are in front of the computer again. They may
also want to order the Service Pack on CD, but this will delay the repair of
Outlook Express.

5. At this point, a box called “Choose Directory for Extracted Files”
should pop up. Have the customer browse to c:\sp\ and hit ok. This should create
an i386 folder within the c:\SP folder. The Service Pack will begin placing a
cache of system files on the customer’s hard drive.

6. Once this is complete, have the customer browse to c:\windows\inf.
Right click on MSOE50.INF and select install. The install should begin prompting
for the Service Pack CD.

7. When prompted for SETUP50.EXE, have the customer hit the “Browse” button and
guide them to c:\sp\i386 and click open, then ok.

8. When prompted for MSOE.HLP, browse to C:\WINDOWS\Help and click open, then ok.

9. When we get a message saying “Setup cannot copy MSOE.TXT” browse to C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express and click open, then press the Retry button.

10. When we get a message saying “Setup cannot copy ALEABANR.GIF” browse to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery and click open, then
Retry.

11. All of the remaining files are stationary files which should not be necessary
for Outlook Express to be functional (They will all be .JPG, .GIF, or .HTM file
extensions.). For these files you will need to click “Cancel” and “Yes” to
continue. You may need to do this up to 20 times.

Section 3)

"Upgraded SP Versions"
---------------------------------------

Begin the reinstall process:

1. In Windows Explorer browse to C:\Windows\Inf

2. Right click on MSOE50.INF and select install
The install should begin prompting for the Service Pack CD.

3. When prompted for SETUP50.EXE, have the customer hit the “Browse” button and
guide them to c:\Windows\Service Pack Files\i386 and click open, then ok

4. When prompted for MSOE.HLP, browse to C:\WINDOWS\Help and click open, then ok.

5. When we get a message saying “Setup cannot copy MSOE.TXT” browse to C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express and click open, then press the Retry button.

6. When we get a message saying “Setup cannot copy ALEABANR.GIF” browse to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery and click open, then
Retry.

7. All of the remaining files are stationary files. If the customer has their
Windows XP CD, ask them to put it in their CD Rom drive, browse to ":\i386"
and hit retry, and setup will complete without further prompts. If they do not
have their CD, these files should not be necessary for Outlook Express to be
functional (They will all be .JPG, .GIF, or .HTM file extensions.). For these files
you will need to click “Cancel” and “Yes” to continue. You may need to do this up
to 20 times.

At this point the installer window should disappear and Outlook Express should be
reinstalled. You may need to restart the system after this is complete for Outlook Express to be fully functional.
